Search Engine Optimization
There is no definitive secret on how to rank well in the search engines. It’s like trying to predict the stock market. However, there are plenty of things you can do to give yourself the best ranking chance possible. Here are a few:
- Keyword-rich title tags
- Keyword-rich headlines
- Keyword-rich content
- Keyword-rich image titles and captions
- Keyword-rich URLs
You get the idea…it’s all about your keywords! Pick your top 5-8 keywords (or even better, keyword phrases) and concentrate on those. In the case of Search Engine Optimization the “throw everything at the wall and see what sticks” is NOT the angle you want to take. Dial it down. Get specific. Then pepper your website with those targeted key phrases. Use them in headlines. Use them for the names of your photos. Even make sure your file names are keyword-rich. For instance, “staff.jpg” is not a good file name. “The-Therapeutic-Company-Staff.jpg” is a much better file name. The search engines look for specific things to decide whether your page is relevant to the search phrases that someone might be typing in. Give them lots of reason to rank you higher by using specific keywords.
What do search engines look for?
There’s many things Google and other search engines look for. Using the WordPress platform, you already have a lot of tools built in. Search engine-friendly URLS are a must. Google will easily read a URL like www.the-therapeutic-company.com/therapeutic-chairs-for-your-back.html” and use the keywords in the URL to rank you higher. This is a much better URL than www.the-therapeutic-company.com/index.cfm?lev1_4567. WordPress automatically creates these search engine-friendly URL strings. WordPress also provides the ability to provide page-specific keywords, which Google also loves. Using the WordPress platform, you already have a leg up on your competition when it comes to SEO!
